Future Shed Frome is part of the Green & Healthy Future for Frome programme. Last month, we called out to people who work with textiles and clothing to get involved in an inspiring new network of makers, designers and stitchers coming together to address reuse and recycling textiles.
It is well known that clothing and fast fashion have a huge environmental impact through carbon emissions and water pollution in manufacturing with tons of textiles ending up in landfill. We want to take action locally – creatively and practically. On Friday 20th May we had a meet up at Frome Town Hall to focus on what we can do together.
We were joined by Tze Ching Yeung, founder of Refashion My Town, a social enterprise and shop based in Chippenham. Connected through our Events & Marketing Lead, Poppy Taylor, who recently gave a talk on youth climate activism there, we invited Tze Ching to our meet to share her inspiring story of making sustainable fashion fun and accessible for young people through repair workshops, upcycling competitions and community events.
Karie Hicks of Crown Yard Hats in Frome brings her concern for the environment into her creations. Karie participated in the first three meet-ups, and said: ‘It was really inspiring to meet so many creative, skilled people who share a passion and concern for the issue of textile sustainability, environmental impact, and responsible sourcing. Very much look forward to seeing how we can turn this into something of value and impact.’
Future Shed is part of Edventure Frome which is well known for its community enterprise projects. Future Shed is a space where people can come together to share ideas and bring environmental initiatives and enterprises to fruition around climate and health. We host a meet up every Friday morning along with free co-working space and opportunities to receive free 1:1 support to develop projects and enterprises. We are part of a unique partnership between Edventure Frome, Frome Medical Practice and Frome Town Council and funded through the National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund.
Our next Clothing & Textiles Future Shed session is being held on Friday 17th June.
We’re inviting anyone working with textiles or clothing in Frome and the surrounding area, to come along and find out more, and join our growing network of friendly people of all ages.
