Choosing Wisely is a programme taking place at Frome Medical Practice.
This video shares more about what we’ve been up to.
The whole Choosing Wisely programme has several parts to it.
Encouraging healthy lifestyles
There are many small changes we can make to our lifestyles that will have a positive impact on our health. This includes doing things such as:
- Stopping smoking
- Being more physically active / moving more (including active travel)
- Healthier eating/eating well
- Reducing stress
- Drinking less alcohol
We’re also ensuring that there are many groups and resources available to help people make important changes to their health.
Reducing the use of unnecessary medication
Frome Medical Practice’s medicines management team are looking at where the Practice may be over-prescribing medication to patients and where the use of different medications can be improved. Examples of this include:
- switching to greener asthma inhalers
- reducing the over-prescribing of antidepressants
- reducing the over-prescribing of blood pressure medication (and encouraging changes to lifestyles instead)
The team are discussing any changes they think they can safely make to patients’ prescriptions with individual patients before changes are made.
Reducing unnecessary testing
There are a lot of areas in general practice where the team in Frome believe they can reduce testing without harming patient care.
The practice team will discuss this with all patients if it relates to any tests they are used to receiving.
